Oompah band hire in the UK comes down to one decision: do you book a British brass band in lederhosen, or a German band that plays this music all year? Both wear the costume. Only one has the accordion, the yodelling and the repertoire that guests recognise as the real thing.
An Oktoberfest event only feels right when the music is right. You can have the flags, the steins, the long benches and the bunting, but what guests remember is the moment the band starts and the room lifts. If you are planning an Oktoberfest in London, anywhere in the UK, or in Dublin, the band is the single biggest lever you have.
What to check before you book
- Authenticity: a German band is authentic if it plays the accordion. That sound is associated with Bavaria the world over. The same goes for the bass line, which belongs on a wind instrument: tuba, euphonium or bass trombone. That characteristic oompah oompah is where the name comes from.
- Variety: audiences outside Germany know the sound but not the lyrics. So that your guests can sing along, the band needs internationally known songs alongside the Bavarian repertoire.
- Flexibility: sometimes there is a full stage, sometimes a corner for two musicians, sometimes a room small enough that no PA is the better choice. A professional band adapts to the room it is given.
- Availability: full-time musicians can play on a Tuesday and can commit months ahead. Bands that play at weekends alongside a day job cannot.
What an oompah band actually does on the night
A good oompah band is not a background act, and it is not simply a list of Bavarian songs played in order. It reads the room and moves it: a warm welcome set while guests arrive, a clear peak after dinner, and enough participation that people who have never met end up singing the same chorus. That is the difference between music in the room and an event people talk about afterwards.
A running order that works
- Guest arrival: warm background set, acoustic or quiet PA.
- Opening and first toast: the welcome moment, everyone in the room at once.
- Dinner: upbeat but not loud enough to stop conversation.
- After dinner: stronger singalongs, clapping, audience participation.
- Peak set: dancefloor energy, medleys, the songs everyone knows.
- Close: one final number the room leaves singing.
London, the UK and Dublin
London runs every format there is: high end corporate parties in hotels and private clubs, warehouse Oktoberfest nights with full production, pub takeovers, brewery events and marquees. The band adapts the show to the space. In a premium corporate setting it starts tasteful and pushes the energy after dinner. At a large public event it goes straight to headline volume.
Outside London we play Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Liverpool, Bristol, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Cardiff, plus rural venues with marquees and long tables, and conference centres that turn into a beer hall for one night. Dublin crowds take to it particularly well: corporate theme nights, hospitality evenings and ticketed Oktoberfest nights where you want a proper show rather than background music.

Three German bands worth knowing
Kirchdorfer
Founded in 1870 and today usually 21 musicians strong, playing the standard mixture of brass, Bavarian music and party songs. Kirchdorfer can only perform before or after the Munich Oktoberfest, because they have played a large tent on the Theresienwiese every year since 1994.
Kapelle Josef Menzl
Became known across Germany when they were allowed to play during the day but not in the evening at the Munich Oktoberfest: the tent host thought they did not build enough atmosphere. Every other band complained about the decision, including the one that took the evening slot instead.
Bergvagabunden
The band behind this site. Bergvagabunden specialises in international clients and plays a great deal in France and the United Kingdom. The singer performs in several languages and speaks fluent English and French, which matters more in a London room than most organisers expect. More about the band.
Sound and production
Most venues already have some form of audio. Where they do not, we hire local PA and lighting sized to the room, including wireless microphones for speeches and a playlist between sets. London load-ins, tight schedules, parking restrictions and sound limiters are all familiar territory. With no PA at all we still reach an audience of roughly a hundred, which is useful for receptions and walking performances.
The practical facts
- Booking: you send an e-mail, you receive a quote. If you agree, you receive a contract and an invoice.
- Payment: half as a deposit, half one week before the event.
- Cancellation: if your event has to be cancelled due to force majeure, you get everything back.
- Travel to the UK and Ireland: we fly in from Germany, hire local sound equipment and book our own hotel rooms.
